Crowdfunding for a Cost-Effective Electric Car
Munich-based start-up Sono Motors presented their prototype for an electric car suited for everyday use. This past July 31st the public had a chance to get to know the Sion, one of the latest innovations in the world of electro-mobility. Thanks to its integrated solar cells it is basically a self-charging electric car.
How it works:
The Sion is a five-door compact van that runs purely on electricity. With a battery capacity of 30 kWh, a range of 250 km and the ability to charge quickly with up to 43 kW it can definitely go the distance. The pinnacle of its design is the viSono, solar cells integrated onto its chassis. With a surface area of 7.5 m² these cells can generate enough electricity to give the Sion thirty additional free kilometers in one day. Furthermore, the Sion allows for bidirectional charging making it a mobile power source. With just a household plug you can use it for common electronic devices up to 2,000 watts.
Offering six seats the Sion is both family-friendly and great for trips with friends. Sit three in front and have additional cargo space in back by folding the rear seats. The center console hosts a ten inch display connecting you to your smartphone via Wi-Fi or Bluetooth giving you instant access all your apps, music and contacts. A towing hitch with a capacity of up to 1,300 kg compatible with most standard trailers.
How it happened:
New ideas don’t come fully into being on their own and Sono Motors initiated a crowdfunding campaign to garner community support. By collecting funds on indiegogo they will bring the Sion electric car with integrated solar cells to the general public at an affordable price. The campaign has raised over 200,000 euros through presales and other donations which will allow the production of prototypes that will be ready to test drive in early 2017. You can keep up on their progress on their Twitter and Facebook.
