What to do when your Passport Expires while you are renting a car?

Renting a car in a different country can be a lot of fun understanding culture while driving through it but what do you do if your passport expires while you are renting a car abroad? After a lot of research all you need to have is a valid drivers license that is not expired.  It can be a international drivers permit or it can be your standard license depending on where you are traveling.  If you are pulled over by the police while abroad without your passport you will most likely be taken to prision to figure things out because you are in the country illegaly. If your passport expires while you are abroad you are in a little bit of trouble but there is something that you can do about it. It is possible however to renew your passport while you are abroad, all you have to do is go to the nearest American Embassy to you. They will help you get it renewed but it might take a couple of days and be more expensive then it would be if you did it before you left the country.  I would reccomend doing this right before your passport is expired to make sure that you do not have to drive any days without a passport if it takes a few days to process.

Moreover the easiest way to renew your passport before you go abroad is just to mail it in with the newel document to an American embassy near you, this process it is the cheapest way to get your passport renewed just becaue you might have to pay the expedit rate while you are abroad.

In summary you do not need a valid passport to rent a car only a drivers license but it is needed for the country that you are in to be driving it would should be shown with your drivers license in case you get pulled over.  Finally renew your passport at home it is easier unless you are in a rush then find the closest American Embassy to you.
