Traffic in Miami can be bad sometimes but thanks to the Miami Tunnel Project this will help a lot of the traffic in the Miami-Dade County. The tunnel was started in 2008 and has been halted because of lack of funds because of the financial crisis. However the Miami tunnel is in progress again. The idea of creating this tunnel is to cut down traffic in Miami and to bring another access point to the Port of Miami instead of crossing the Port Bridge. This also gives drivers an option to access the Port of Miami from highways I-395 and I-95 cutting down travel times and traffic jams. This will hopefully bring more customers into the area which thrives on tourism.

Why Build the Tunnel?

It is very important to build the tunnel because there are several benefits that can help the Miami area. The cruise industry has increased in Miami making the traffic more congested near the Miami port and this will give people a second entrance and exit point.  This will definitely decrease the congestion that goes within the city of Miami giving more routes to go around Miami with the Tunnel connecting to two major highways in Miami.  This will allow cargo and semi trucks an alternate route to get into Miami instead of taking side streets within Miami. This is going to make a big difference in traffic and overall create more revenue within the Miami Port area.

Who is building it?

The tunnel is being built in a partnership with the MAT Concessionaire, Miami-Dade County, City of Miami, and the Florida Department of Transportation.

So when the Port of Miami Tunnel is built expect the traffic and congestion in Miami to be decreased dramatically.
