Car Rental Guide in Israel

Renting a car in Israel is similar to the process of renting a car in the United States. There are multiple agencies that rent cars, including local companies and international companies. Many of these rental car agencies offer discounts for travelers who reserve cars online, but you can also find cars waiting at the airport and other locations. Most companies do not rent to travelers under the age of 21, but some companies require that the primary driver be at least 24 years of age.

When renting a car, you must show an international driver’s license or a license from your country of origin. Most companies will accept a license issued in the United States, but if you want to rent a larger vehicle or passenger van, you must have an international driver’s license. Every company charges a fee called a VAT, which is the Value Added Tax. This applies to anyone living in Israel who rents a vehicle, but if you possess a passport from another country, you can show your passport and the company will remove that fee.

When renting a car, you must decide if you want to make a reservation or take your chances once you arrive in the country. Reserving a car ensures that the vehicle you want is waiting when you land, but most companies will only hold your reservation for one hour. If you encounter any flight delays or other problems, the company has the right to give your reservation away and give you a different vehicle.

Once you arrive at the rental counter, you must show a valid passport and a valid driver’s license. The company will also ask for a credit card that has the name of the driver listed on the front. You cannot pay with a card in someone else’s name. If you need to authorize more than one driver on the vehicle, you must show a passport and license for each person. After signing the paperwork that authorizes the drivers, the company will charge a deposit onto the card, which covers the entire length of your rental.

You also have the option of paying for insurance on the vehicle. If your automobile insurance or your credit card covers rentals, you must present documentation of that insurance when you rent the car. Israeli rental companies require some form of insurance before you leave the lot. As long as you have the proper documentation, you can typically get in and out within minutes.
